Don’t Tell Me I Cannot Do Something, 2014 –(Proposal)
Lightbox

My inspiration for this work came from observing the people who were
visiting the Brixton Sport and Social Club, whether for the Soup Kitchen
or the Domino Club. It seemed to me that they were seeking protection,
a place that belongs to them and where they belong. They didn’t had it
easy but they won’t let anyone abuse them. They would seize any oportunity
that would help improve their circumstances

“Don’t tell me I cannot do something” illustrates that determination,
with a slight hint of humour. The title is inspired by the movie
Back to The Future, 1985, in which the main character always mentions
this phrase whenever he is told he is a wimp. The sign would be placed
right at the front of the property and would be facing the road,
speaking directly to whoever passes by. It’s a bold statement of
confidenceand resilience.
